Michigan’s Adventure Staircase Remodel

Staircase to Heaven: Rust No More

Deteriorated staircases were replaced with new, galvanized stringers and fiberglass stair treads.

Project Need:
Michigan’s Adventure had two problems. First, the staircase to a major slide tower had deteriorated so badly that it was deemed unsafe. Second, opening day was weeks away. Panic time.

Project Description:
Enter PurePlay. An in-house engineer took measurements and assessed the structure in order to design new stairs, which would have a 20-year lifespan.

The deteriorated stairs were removed, as well as the stringers and railing on one tower. The rails were saved, and PurePlay manufactured new custom galvanized stringers to match the existing layout. The new stringers and old rails were installed and painted to match the existing steel.

To finish the job, rustproof fiberglass treads were installed on the stringers.

Project Result:
Opening day came and went, and no one seemed to notice the new staircase. And that’s just the way the owners at Michigan’s Adventure wanted it. Instead of worrying about rust on a deteriorating staircase, the kids could focus their energies on the slides themselves.
